Five years ago, Project Opera of Manhattan (now coópera: pom) was founded by a group of young artists with three very clear goals: to provide opportunities for young deserving artists in all areas involved in the creation of an opera production, to bring opera to people and communities that otherwise would not be exposed to it, and to return opera to its roots of story-telling through simple and compelling productions.
Since its beginnings, coópera has established itself as one of the best hidden operatic jewels in New York City. Running on an incredibly low average budget of about $17K per production, it manages to hire a full young artist orchestra for every single production. In its first two seasons, coópera gained the respect and support of luminaries in the field, and was able to provide a summer workshop for teens and pre-teens from the Bronx to join the adult chorus in one of its productions, presented in Midtown and in the heart of El Barrio. coópera has accomplished much in a very short amount of time, and it continues striving for higher goals.
